5 Things Every Homeowner Should Know About Their Switchboard

Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system, quietly working away to keep everything powered, protected, and (most importantly) safe.

It’s one of those things most people never think about… until the lights go out or something trips in the middle of dinner. So, here are five things every homeowner should know about their switchboard – and why it might be time for a quick check-up.

1. It’s Not Just a Box of Fuses

Modern switchboards do a lot more than distribute power. They house safety devices like circuit breakers, RCDs (Residual Current Devices), and surge protection – all of which protect your family from electric shock and prevent potential fire risks.
If your switchboard still has ceramic fuses or exposed wiring, it’s worth upgrading to a modern, enclosed unit that meets today’s safety standards.

2. RCDs Save Lives

RCDs monitor the electrical current flowing through your circuits. If they detect even a small leak (for example, if someone accidentally touches a live wire), they cut power in milliseconds.
Most older homes either don’t have RCDs or only have them on a few circuits – which means parts of your home might not be protected. Adding RCDs to all circuits is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve safety.

3. Label Everything Clearly

It might seem minor, but correct labelling can save serious confusion – especially when something trips. Each switch or breaker should be clearly marked for what it controls (e.g. oven, lights, power points, garage).
If yours is a mystery board full of faded scribbles or blank spaces, take the time to get it relabelled. We do this as part of every inspection and upgrade – and your future self will thank you!

4. Old Boards Can Struggle with Modern Loads

Homes today use far more electricity than they did 20 or even 10 years ago — heatpumps, induction cooktops, EV chargers, spa pools, you name it.
Older switchboards simply weren’t designed to handle those loads safely. If your board hasn’t been checked since before your last renovation (or before Wi-Fi existed 😱), it’s definitely due for a review.

5. A Quick Inspection Can Prevent a Big Problem

Like anything electrical, switchboards wear out over time. Loose connections, dust, moisture, or pests can all cause issues.
A quick inspection by a licensed electrician can identify hazards early and keep your system compliant with current regulations. At Cassidy-Davies Electrical, we include switchboard checks in our standard 9-Point Electrical Inspection, and we can give you honest advice on whether an upgrade’s needed or not.

Your switchboard isn’t something to ignore – it’s a key safety system that deserves a little attention.
If you’re unsure about the age or condition of yours, book a quick check with our team. We’ll make sure everything’s up to standard so you can flick the switch with confidence.
