Kōawa Studios – Building the Future of Creative Tech
Tucked away on the Dovedale Campus at the University of Canterbury, Kōawa Studios is set to become a game-changer for Aotearoa’s creative technology sector – and the Cassidy-Davies team is proud to be helping bring it to life.
This high-tech development will be the South Island’s first commercial-grade screen and creative tech hub, with facilities designed for film, animation, sound production, motion capture, game development, and more. It’s not every day you get to wire up a place that’ll help shape the next generation of digital storytelling – but that’s exactly what our crew is doing.
Where We’re At
Right now, the project is very much in the progress phase – and it’s all hands on deck.
Led by Jacob on site, with Project Manager Cam keeping everything humming behind the scenes, our team is:

Installing cable tray and containment

Running (what feels like) thousands of kilometres of cable

Coordinating with Southbase Construction, who are delivering an extremely well-run site
It’s still early days, but already you can see this facility taking shape – and standing out. The work we’re doing here will support cutting-edge features like green screen studios, virtual production tech, and motion capture, all housed in a new purpose-built Production and Postproduction Building.
Why Kōawa Matters
More than just a building, Kōawa is a big step forward for the screen industry in Aotearoa. Through partnerships with names like Aardman Animations and work-integrated learning opportunities for students in the Bachelor of Digital Screen (Hons) program, Kōawa will prepare students for global careers in the creative tech space – and give them hands-on experience in world-class facilities.
