People love their jobs for many different reasons. No matter a person’s profession — be it lawyer, teacher, nurse, or, yes, electrician — the reasons why we like our jobs and consequently show up to work each day often come down to what motivates us most. According to David Burkus, the top three common motivators at work are autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
We did a little social experiment and asked each member of the Cassidy-Davies Electrical team why they like working as electricians. The answers were varied, but most were connected by two common threads: the rewarding feeling of solving problems and the people met through work. Thus, proving that competence and relatedness are indeed two key motivators of our team!
Here’s exactly what eleven of our team members (electricians and apprentices alike) had to say:
Doug: “As an electrician, I seem to get challenges and like to see the happy customers afterwards.”
Logan: “I like being an electrician because there is a variety of work, and it is very interesting.”
Kyle: “I enjoy the variety of work and problem-solving.”
Brodie: “The people you work with.”
Dan: “I like doing something that keeps the world turning, travelling to different sites, and challenges associated within the industry.”
Sean: “I enjoy the opportunity to help apprentices learn and progress.”
Caleb: “I like fault-finding and the problem-solving that is required to solve issues.”
Zac: “The variation of sites/working at different locations. It keeps me entertained.”
George: “Getting the opportunity to get out and about, meeting new people whilst at work.”
Cam: “I enjoy the problem-solving and coming up with creative solutions to get the best results on jobs.”
Jasper: “I like learning a unique skill that I can use to help friends and family.”
